One only has to pick up a copy of the school’s yearbook WISDOM to see how important and valued Horizons Week at West Island School is. The pages shine with the enjoyment and achievements of our students. Horizons Week encapsulates everything that we believe in as a school. The week is built on a strong partnership between students, staff and external service providers; it is a week full of exciting learning opportunities; it encourages everyone to develop the spirit to meet great challenge head on and students gain a wonderful sense of personal achievement from their endeavours. All this from an educational experience that develops the whole person through creative, active and empathetic engagement with the world around us.
CAS stands for Creativity, Activity and Service. It is an important part of the non- academic life of the school and we value contributions in each of these three areas highly. During Horizons Week lessons are suspended for five days and students have the opportunity to take part in a broad range of experiences that are not normally available through the usual timetable. Horizons Week is a compulsory part of our broader curriculum and attendance is therefore mandatory.
All students are asked to select 3 experiences; note that the three options selected must all be equally valid choices and students must be happy with participating in any of the 3 selected. Students will not be able to change their minds once the 3 choices have been submitted.
In response to feedback from students, parents and colleagues, we have included a wider range of experiences locally, as well as broadening horizons and visiting new destinations which have not previously featured in the HW programme. There also remains the traditional overnight residentials and experiences which have always been popular and successful in fulfilling the requirements of the school's CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) programme.
